Improve Your Culture: From Athletics to Business

Lighthouse Technologies CEO & President Jeff Van Fleet presented at Technology First’s 21st Annual Ohio Information Security Conference (OISC) in Dayton, Ohio. In his breakout session, Jeff shared how FOCUS, an app used to build successful and sustainable cultures for Athletic Teams across the country, is now tailorable for Business Teams. If you are looking to elevate your team’s game but were unable to attend Jeff’s presentation, read the summary of his demo below to learn how you can empower your employees with FOCUS.

What is Focus?

Watch the following video to learn why we initially developed FOCUS for athletic teams. Through interviews and surveys with championship-level coaches, we’ve learned exactly what coaches need in order to build long-term success:

  1. A clearly defined ‘Culture of We’
  2. Growing team leaders who self-correct
  3. Internal alignment
Regardless of whether you are on an athletic team or business team, these three factors are essential to success.

The FOCUS app helps teams build a ‘Culture of We’, improve team leadership, and establish internal alignment by measuring and tracking the things that athletes can control. We call these “Hustle Stats” – behaviors that require concentration and effort, not talent. Focusing on (and celebrating) controllable behaviors that lead to desired outcomes is our proven philosophy for success. Using softball as an example, 3X Olympic Gold Medalist Leah Amico shares how FOCUS has helped 30+ athletic teams across the country do just this!

From the Locker Room to the Boardroom

Although we initially built FOCUS for athletic teams, because of its ability to transform organizations, we have been getting a lot of interest from businesses as well. Coaches want players who hustle, engage, and do the little things that lead to great outcomes — and the same is true for business leaders. One area where FOCUS can help your organization is cyber security as research shows people represent the greatest opportunity for mitigating cyber threats. That’s why its crucial that each member of your team is properly trained to recognize and avoid cyber attacks, and is encouraged to report them. Tracking the things your employees can control with FOCUS will build a culture of cyber accountability, engagement, and security within your organization. Examples of Cyber Hustle Stats you can measure with FOCUS include, but are not limited to:

  • Good Password Scans
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Adoption
  • Phishing Recognition/Avoidance

Does your organization currently have a culture where its employees feel comfortable admitting that they made a mistake and were phished? Think about how badly employees feel if their click caused a disruption in service or a ransomware attack. With FOCUS, you can track and reward the # of phishing emails/texts/etc. that each employee reports (See Team Productivity Chart). Rewarding your staff for how many phishing attacks they report not only builds a culture of accountability, but reduces and eliminates the shame they feel when clicking on a real phishing email.

In order to foster healthy competition and encourage continuous improvement, the FOCUS app displays team leaderboards. As you can see, your organization’s various departments or locations can compete to see who has the best cyber security performance. And, we recommend you consider developing monthly or quarterly rewards for the department that is most engaged, most improved, etc. We always recommend the carrot over the stick. The app also has historic graphs which show how your departments are performing over time. When you see a graph decline, it is a great visual indication that you consider another cyber security training or find a tool to better protect your employees.

Whether its cyber, customer service, or accounts receivable, if building a strong culture, empowering your people, and providing clear communication is a priority for your company, please reach out for a FOCUS demo.
